The Red Tailed Black Cockatoos are a group of friends who get together weekly to share their stories.

These stories, essays and poems are prompted by an agreed theme. Although the theme is common to each tale the resulting stories are often very different.

The authors, who live in Australia’s South West, bring a wealth of experience, knowledge and opinions to their work. The results are often poignant, deeply personal and at times very funny. Their bibliographies tell you just a little something about each of them.

Ana Brawls

Ana Brawls is a librarian, originally from Brazil. Her work explores family traditions, myths, belonging and the human condition through alternative realities. Her poems and short stories have been published by the Centre for Stories, Bangalore Review and Australian Poetry Journal.

Ann Edwards

Ann Edwards was a single mother with no career prospects who, in the 1980s, successfully became the only female board member of an American Investment Bank based in London. When the bank failed she went back packing for a year; visiting half of Europe and much of Asia. When she arrived in Perth she sold tickets for rides at the Perth Royal Show. Later qualifying to teach English as a foreign language Ann taught in Malta before returning to London to work as a small business consultant. She continued advising small businesses when she migrated to Perth. Keen to learn more of its history and culture, at Murdoch University Ann studied Australian history, literature and film. With a lot of stories to tell she also delved into the art of creative writing. Settling in Augusta, and as President of the Augusta Historical Society Ann led a talented dedicated team which computerized the Society’s extensive records.

Annie Horner

Annie Horner is a retired teacher and academic. She recently completed a PhD in creative writing. The creative artefact of this doctoral thesis has been published as a book entitled ‘No One Was Watching’. She now resides in Margaret River with her husband Ross.

Chloe Lovelidge

Chloe Lovelidge was aspired to write creatively, ever since she won her one and only writing competition age 7 Years. She retired from her 50 year career in medicine in 2021. Since then the Margaret River Writers group and now The Red Tailed Black Cockatoos have been her weekly inspiration to create a memoir, although she is often diverted to writing children’s stories, political satire and futuristic imaginings.

Clare Timmons

Claire Timmons is a retired classical guitar teacher and Early childhood Music Teacher, trained in the Suzuki method. In former lives Claire has done lots of questionable things. She worked in the operational research department of the UK subsidiary of the biggest company in the world (exploiting natural resources), then was paid to gamble (let’s call it arbitrage) in the Australian financial futures markets, before becoming a head-hunter, poaching in the city of London and also Paris and Madrid. It was in this role, interviewing and “profiling” candidates, that she practiced writing. All these things she did in the sincere and ignorant belief that she was doing no harm.

Claire grew up in England more convinced that she was Australian than most Australians. This was because her parents were fifth generation Australians transported to the north of England. English language was her worst subject at school despite being able to speak English with flair and despite her mother being an English teacher. Her favourite activity was playing. And laughing. Playing with friends, playing sport, playing guitar, playing chess, playing outside, painting and drawing, singing, playing at school, playing on the way home from school.

She prides herself on being scientific and rational (which she is not). She definitely doesn’t like gobble-de-gook. It’s her pet hate. As well as common sense she is very fond of nonsense. Very fond of Michael Leunig and Dr Seuss.

Claire was brought up in a Methodist church-going family and though no longer a church goer -and denying that she is a believer – she loves Jesus and loves children’s’ hymns like “Jesus bids us shine with a pure clear light.” and “Jesus wants me for a Sunbeam.” These days she suffers regularly from burn out.

Claire has been living in Margaret River for 19 years – with her husband Bryan – who she declares is her most “wonderful thing”. They have 5 children and 10 grandchildren between them.

Joining a University of the 3rd Age writing class with Margo Edwards several years ago she found herself writing bouncy poetry. She puts this down to running music classes for babies and toddlers for 15 years and repeatedly singing nursery rhymes that have played havoc with her literary capabilities. These days writing, bird photography and making music are her favorite pastimes.

Linda McKellar

Linda McKellar has studied and worked in creative industries including the visual arts, journalism, and change management in higher education and the public sector where she has been recognised internationally for this work. Since settling back in Margaret River, she has focused on writing profound miniature poems and flash fiction that share her perception of her evolving relationship with her life, environment and world. Living with her husband between the forest and by sea brings her great joy.

Marg English

Margaret English received the Order of Australia medal in 2004 for work done in the community of Margaret River and in the development of Timor Leste. She has completed a book with her late Husband about his years with the Special Air Service. To be published. She is now enjoying the freedom of writing in her own space.

Ross Goulden

Ross Goulden Ex farmer, thoroughbred horse breeder. Musician – piano. Worked with South West Opera Company several choirs. Teaching. Community work = Riding for the Disabled – State and National President. In M.R Organise concerts incl. wkly “Young at Heart” President of U3A Margaret River.
